Nigeria to Prepare Prepaid Database: SIM Detail Registration

Nigerian Government has planned to register details of all prepaid subscribers by next year in order to help improving social security and crime situation. Telecom regulator of Nigeria declared that they will start the process on march next and will take around 6 months to complete the whole project. Declaration also includes the cancellation of all prepaid SIM connections after the deadline.

Lolia Emakpore, The head of Consumer Affairs at Nigerian Communications Commission said "The SIM card registration is in line with complaints that the commission had gotten that mobile phones are used to aid crimes and government has instructed the commission to adopt a mode to help stop crime."

There is no effective database in Nigeria and because of that all 6 geo-political zones in the country can be covered by 6 months and also can be entered into local government areas, she expected. She instructed subscriber to produce National Identity Card during the registration process. Also to protect fraud, Biometric identification process will be deployed.

Telecom operators are deeply suspicious about the process of implementation of the project.
